I got to where I was to where I am by accident. A blood clot in my leg ended up manifesting into a pulmonary embolism so severe the doctor in ICU said he’d never seen someone with one as severe as mine was…alive. I spent a year on supplemental oxygen. My weight gain comes from two things…two years of inactivity while recovering (PE can cause those afflicted to tire very easily), and eating more than I normally would because of depression and anxiety caused through this experience. My life came to a complete stop, and I barely slept the first three months…in fear if I went to sleep I might not wake up.
I’m mostly recovered now, but this additional weight is taking its toll on me. I tire easily. I’m positive this is because I’m 80 pounds overweight. Imagine being the weight you are and carrying around one of the following: three car tires, 8 – 10 pound bags of potatoes, 16 – 2 liters of soda, 9 gallons of milk…I bet you’d be dragging a bit too! It’s like I’m wearing a ‘fat apron’ and I hate it. I avoid having my picture taken because of how much weight I’ve gained.
I’m asking for your help to fund the procedure because insurance doesn’t cover it. I’m not a good candidate for gastric surgery due to potential blood clotting issues.
I’ve been advised if I follow the program I could lose 30-50 pounds in 6 months and an additional 40 pounds over the final six months. I’m very motivated to lose weight and am positive I could exceed their predictions.
I’m requesting $8,000 for the following:
Gastric Balloon procedure and aftercare – $7,450
After procedure supplements & 20 meals – $400
Fitness assessment & 3 personal trainer sessions* – $150
*Guidance so I know I am exercising safely and using the equipment correctly.
The faster the procedure is funded, the higher the possibility I might be able to participate in a medical study where I’d receive additional monitoring, support, and $200 per visit over 16 mandated study visits/evaluations ($3200 in total). That would come in handy as I lose weight to replace clothes that no longer fit.
There is no guarantee I will be admitted into the study as participants are only being accepted through the end of May, and this may close early if they find enough subjects to participate. Even if I don’t raise funds in time to potentially participate in the study, funds raised will go towards the procedure.
If you find yourself so moved to donate, you’ll not only help improve my health, losing weight will make a huge difference when it comes to my future career…as studies show overweight women have a harder time finding work and are paid less. Being overweight shouldn’t overshadow the fact I’m smart, talented, and beautiful…but it will.
I promise to give updates on my progress. I enjoy witty conversation, and if you need to bounce ideas off someone…or you just want someone to talk to, someone who’ll listen…I’d be open to that. When I get down to my goal weight, I want to do a Tough Mudder, and you’d be welcome to join me! If you have a sense of fun and adventure, after I’ve made significant progress in reaching my goal weight…whether it’s joining me on a Tough Mudder, the CN Tower Edge Walk, or something a bit more low key like attending a concert/going to the theatre together…I’m sure we could find something equally fun and memorable and make some fantastic memories together. Whatever the case may be, you’d have my appreciation, my thanks, and I look forward to getting to know you as a friend.
